Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Participants in Abriendo Oportunidades for girls in Guatemala.   Mayan girls are the most disadvantaged group in Guatemala. The Council’s Abriendo Oportunidades program, “creating opportunities,” is now national in scope.

School girls in India.   Girls who are able to attend school, like these girls in Amendabad, India, marry later and have fewer children. And while attending school, they become safer, enjoy enhanced social status, and have better opportunities for self-actualization.

Breakthrough in microbicide research: A gel tested by CAPRISA in South Africa indicates that it is safe and effective in reducing the risk of HIV and herpes infections among women participants; confirmatory research is needed.
