    The Caregiver Project

    Kim Gerstman, associate director of development, visited USAID-funded Council projects in South Africa including the Caregiver Project, which raises awareness of the need for early HIV diagnosis and treatment for children. (more)

  2. Poverty, Gender, and Youth

    Safe and smart savings products for adolescent girls

    In Kenya and Uganda, the Council is collaborating with financial institutions and girls’ programs to develop appropriate ways for adolescent girls to save money. (more)

  3. Reproductive Health

    Assessing sexual and reproductive health needs of indigenous youth

    Council researchers are working with young women in Oaxaca, Mexico, to improve attitudes and practices regarding reproductive health. (more)

The Council invites interested researchers to apply for a training workshop in Cairo to build the capacity of junior researchers in Egypt on reproductive health for youth. The application deadline for the 20–24 March workshop is 10 February 2010. (PDF)

In observance of International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM, the Council's INTACT Network is hosting "Interventions to Accelerate the Abandonment of FGM: Lessons Learned," an online e-discussion, 8–20 February 2010. This global online forum is an opportunity to share lessons learned, pose questions, and have a discussion with colleagues who are experienced in the field of FGM. (more)

New statistics project more than five million fewer deaths from AIDS in 2030 than previously estimated. The Population Council's John Bongaarts and co-authors François Pelletier and Patrick Gerland address the cause and implications of the revised estimate in a recent article in The Lancet, "How many more AIDS deaths?" BMJ has announced the nominees for its prestigious annual award for "Getting Research into Practice." The Sexual Health and HIV Evidence into Practice (SHHEP) group—to which ABBA, a Population Council–led consortium, belongs—was nominated for successfully "advocating research findings to change the law in Ghana so that survivors of gender based and sexual violence are no longer forced to pay for their own medical tests to prove assault in court." The Population Council was well represented at the 2009 International Conference on Family Planning in Kampala, Uganda (15–18 November). Staff shared their latest findings via a wide array of presentations and disseminated resources at an exhibit booth. (more)
