International AIDS Conference

ANNOUNCEMENT: Breakthrough in microbicide research

On July 18–23, more than 20,000 scientists, political leaders, implementers, people living with HIV, and other stakeholders from around the world will convene in Vienna to assess progress, challenges, and future actions in the global fight against HIV. Population Council staff will present new research results on an array of populations, settings, and interventions.

 

Highlights at the conference

Council work featured at AIDS 2010 includes an evaluation of self HIV testing for health care workers in Kenya, operations research to reduce the risk of HIV and other STIs among sex workers in Brazil, and initiatives to strengthen the response to sexual and gender-based violence in Uganda, Rwanda, and South Africa.

Population Council president Peter Donaldson recently honored Mexico City’s Ministry of Health, its mayor, and its minister of health for the government of Mexico City's commitment to improving the reproductive health of Mexican women. The presentation ceremony took place at the Council’s international headquarters in New York City. (more)

Population Council staff presented findings related to the integration of HIV messages into religious teachings in Ethiopia; exploring pathways to abortion in India; providing care for those who've experienced sexual violence; and incorporating transportation subsidies into maternal health voucher systems during the 37th Annual International Conference on Global Health in Washington, DC, 14–18 June. On 24 May, Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times Columnist Nicholas D. Kristof spoke on issues the Population Council cares about and addresses, including maternal mortality, women's and girls' empowerment, family planning, poverty reduction, and gender.
